Contact Dr. McDonald if you notice a lump or bump that is new. Frequently lymph nodes swell with infection but if they remain enlarged for more than a couple of weeks, they probably need to be evaluated. The thyroid gland can also swell for a variety of reasons, making it difficult to swallow or causing a visible bump in your neck. This can be evaluated with a simple ultrasound. A fine needle aspiration biopsy can be done for larger or more worrisome bumps. This provides a sample of cells from the site that can be looked at under a microscope to determine if they are benign or a cancerous to help guide further treatment. Dr. McDonald treats both benign and cancerous lumps and bumps in the skin and soft tissues of the head, neck and throat including the salivary glands, thyroid and parathyroid glands.
